The role

We are looking for a Senior Patent Counsel to join our Group Legal function based in either of our Liverpool or Bristol offices (between which our IP team is currently split) and reporting to our Head of Patents. 

The successful candidate will need sufficient experience to efficiently manage, optimise and defend the Group’s patent portfolios, manage IP risk and provide strategic advice to the Group regarding patent matters across a range of technology areas.

The role is suited to a confident, commercially astute, qualified European patent attorney with excellent communication skills who would enjoy working with a diverse group of stakeholders (including technical experts, product category managers and senior management) on a wide range of patent issues, including idea captures, patent filings and prosecution, oppositions, portfolio management and filing strategies, FTO exercises, IP due diligence & advice on corporate transactions and patent litigation. 

Key accountabilities

  • Maintaining regular communication with, and securing efficient and thorough idea capture from, the Group’s innovation teams
  • Ensuring the strategic filing and effective prosecution, maintenance and defence of patents on inventions generated or acquired by the Group
  • Working closely with other members of the Group IP team to maintain a fit-for-purpose patent portfolio strategy in line with business needs and direction
  • Managing FTO exercises in connection with R&D projects and proposed product launches or acquisitions
  • Advising procurement and R&D teams in connection with landscaping and technology scouting
  • Supporting Corporate Development projects with IP due diligence and advice
  • Working closely with other members of Group IP on multi-jurisdiction patent litigation
  • Managing external attorneys, including in connection with prosecution, opposition and FTO matters
  • Managing external spend within budgets
  • Providing training to members of the R&D teams in connection with patentability and FTO issues
  • Managing, supervising and if necessary training one of more patent engineers and/or part-qualified attorneys

Skills & experience

Essential:

  • Fully qualified patent attorney with at least 6 years’ experience (at least 3 years post-qualification) in patent law
  • Commercial astuteness
  • High levels of organisation, accuracy and attention to detail 
  • Agility to manage change and/or urgent business demands
  • Analytical thinking and good problem-solving skills
  • Excellent relationship-building skills and ability to work with teams and across multiple disciplines and cultures
  • Strong presence, with ability to clearly and succinctly communicate advice to business managers

Desirable:

  • Flexibility to travel
  • Experience working in-house or directly with commercial and/or innovation teams
